Greenwich Cemetery was founded 1856 by the Burial Board. There are two Gothic chapels, and a 1930s lodge. Around the cemetery are railings, and brick piers with stone capitals. There are panoramic views from top of hill of Crystal Palace and towards the City. There are various areas within the cemetery such as Great War Heroes Corner and Commonwealth Burial Ground, a Norwegian section for refugees of World War II, and a Children's section. Due to the proximity of the military academy and other institutions at Woolwich, there are many soldiers buried here.
