Menageries were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and often set up their shows in local parks. Bostock and Wombwell’s Menagerie was very well known. It traveled the length and breadth of the country giving many people their first glimpse of living, wild animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, snakes and exotic birds.
