Games and hobbies

Children in the past didn't have the variety of games and entertainments you have today. They had no X-boxes, TV's, computer games or MP3 players!

Instead they made up their own games out of everyday objects, or invented songs and rhymes to go with the games and sports they played outdoors.

Look at the photographs below showing children and adults playing in the park.

Choose from the drop down list whether you would like to 'join in', 'watch', or 'avoid' - then say why!

Write a limerick.

A limerick is a humorous five line poem that rhymes. Write a limerick about one of these activities. Nosey Parky gives you an example:

A young boy from Enfield called Mark
Wanted to play in the park.
He put on his wellies,
Filled the park pond with jellies,
And stamped around just for a lark!

Write an acrostic poem.

An acrostic is a poem in which the first letter, last letter or middle of each line spells out a word or phrase.

Nosey Parky has an example below. Can you find others?

Take the rope
Use those muscles
Go, go, heave

One, two, three pull them
Forwards, forwards

We’re winning
Ahh! We’ve tugged them
Right across the line

Send us your work!

Send your limericks or acrostics to Meet at the Park. The funniest will be posted on the website.

See teacher's area on how to send your work.
