Tree Friends

Trees are an important and valuable feature of many parks and gardens, and many parks authorities are encouraging new tree planting and the creation of woodland areas.

However, there are times when you will see trees being chopped down or their branches chopped off, as in the picture below.

Look at the picture below, then answer the questions about why you think trees may need to be trimmed or chopped down.

Managing trees

Why do you think park workers may need to trim or chop down trees in some cases? Tick ALL the answers below you think are right, then click on the button to check your answers!

Because they are old or diseased.
Because they are obstructing roads or paths.
Because they might frighten visitors.
Because they will grow better if they are managed.
Because they drop leaves in autumn and it's a nuisance to clear them up.

What can you do?

There are lots of things you can do to help protect trees. For example, you could:

  • Recycle paper in your home.
  • Buy recycled paper products.
  • Plant new trees, or take part in tree sponsorship schemes.
  • Buy wooden furniture which has the FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) logo so that you can be sure it's from a sustainable source.

If you want to make an active commitment to helping to protect trees, print out and sign this pledge!
