Plan your Park

Imagine you are a wealthy landowner in the seventeenth century, and you have asked an architect and gardener to design a house and parkland for you.

What would you include in your plans, and why?
Would you have a formal garden, a wild meadow, or vegetable or herb gardens?
Would you include ponds and lakes, woodlands, or pastures for animals?
Would you include buildings - for example, sheds, summer houses or gatehouses?
Would you surround your park with walls or fences? What sort of gates would you need?

Draw a plan of your park similar to the one shown above. You can use different colours to represent different features such as grass, woodland, flowers and buildings. Make a key to show what your colours mean, or use the same key as the plan.
